Memorial Day in Korea
May 6th is Memorial Day here in South Korea, a public holiday. Our weekend was busy so we decided to take it easy, since it was an extended weekend for L.
We went to Gudarae Park and spent the afternoon walking around. We had been meaning to visit that park for like a year now. We thought it was far away, but we discorvered it was just around downtown Buyeo. There are statues and structures all over the park, which are quite an attraction. Families were gathered and enjoying the holiday, too.
The Huang He River (Yellow river) is perhaps the main attraction at the park. An historic cliff overlooks the park. It is said that during the Baekje era (AD 660), 3000 court ladies threw themselves off the cliff to avoid being captured by the invading Silla army.
After the fun, it was snack time! We ate korean snacks, including sogogi kimbap (beef, vegetables, and rice rolled in dried sea weed) and kimchi kimbap (kimchi & vegetables rolls). It was quite an eventful day for us :)
